Juan Carlos Espinosa is Associate Dean and Fellow of The Honors College at Florida International University. Espinosa is a political scientist by training specializing in comparative politics, civil-military relations, and Latin American issues. His current research interests include civil-military relations and the role of armed forces as economic actors, the role of diasporas in the politics of their countries of origin, and change and continuity in Cuban and Cuban-American politics. Espinosa has lectured widely on issues as diverse as the state and civil society in authoritarian regimes, Latin American politics, international relations, and on the future of Cuba. He recently finished a manuscript on the emergence of state and civil society in Cuba, and is currently conducting research on the potential role of the Cuban military in a regime transition.
